UpToDate, Inc.
Several triptans are effective options for acute treatment of migraine. The choice of triptan should be individualized, as patients may respond differently to each medication. Treatment should be initiated early after the onset of migraine symptoms, with the possibility of repeating doses if the initial response is suboptimal. Caution is advised regarding the frequency of use to prevent medication-overuse headaches, and certain contraindications are noted for specific patient populations.
