Posture is defined as the subconscious adjustment of muscle tone to ensure smooth, accurate movements and maintain equilibrium. Muscle tone, or tonus, is the continuous passive partial contraction of muscles, crucial for posture and movement, and is primarily developed and maintained by gamma motor neurons and muscle spindles through spinal segmental reflexes. Regulation of muscle tone involves supraspinal centers in the brain that either facilitate or inhibit tone. Postural reflexes, including static (righting, supporting, segmental, attitudinal) and statokinetic reflexes, are essential for maintaining body position at rest and during movement, respectively, with afferent impulses originating from proprioceptors, the vestibular apparatus, and the retina.
