ARRHYTHMOGENIC MITRAL VALVE PROLAPSE AND SUDDEN CARDIAC DEATH: AN UPDATE AND CURRENT PERSPECTIVES

Mitral valve prolapse (MVP) is a common condition affecting 2% to 3% of the population, primarily women, and is a leading cause of chronic mitral regurgitation. While many patients remain asymptomatic, a small subset is at risk for severe complications, including life-threatening ventricular arrhythmias and sudden cardiac death. This review discusses the underlying mechanisms contributing to these risks, including myocardial scarring and the effects of inflammation on fibrosis pathways. The document also addresses management strategies for patients with MVP and associated arrhythmias.
