Advanced chronic liver disease is a significant cause of morbidity and mortality, with portal hypertension being a primary complication. Non-selective beta blockers (NSBB) are established in preventing variceal hemorrhage, and carvedilol, a newer NSBB, shows promise due to its additional effects. This article reviews the current literature on when and why to initiate carvedilol therapy in patients with cirrhosis, focusing on its potential benefits and contraindications.
