Fungal Infections, Treatment and Antifungal Resistance: The Sub-Saharan African Context

Fungal pathogens cause a wide range of infections in humans, affecting over a billion individuals globally and leading to an estimated 1.5 million deaths annually. The increasing population at risk of fungal infections in sub-Saharan Africa, particularly among immunocompromised individuals, highlights the urgent need for understanding antifungal usage and resistance in the region. This document discusses the challenges posed by multidrug-resistant fungal strains and the limited availability of novel antifungal drugs, emphasizing the importance of regular evaluation of resistance patterns to optimize treatment strategies.
