Invasive candidiasis (IC) is a serious infection caused by various Candida species and is the most common fungal disease in hospitals in high-income countries. Despite improvements in health systems and ICU care, mortality rates in IC have not significantly improved over the last few decades. This review discusses the limitations of current diagnostic tests, the need for standardized effectiveness outcomes, and the challenges in managing IC in different patient populations, including those in ICUs and hematological patients. It also highlights the importance of empirical antifungal therapy and the potential of new antifungal compounds.
