METABOLIC ACIDOSIS IN PATIENTS WITH CKD: EPIDEMIOLOGY, PATHOGENESIS

Metabolic acidosis is diagnosed in patients with CKD when plasma or venous blood bicarbonate concentration is lower than 22 mmol/L, affecting about 20% of CKD patients. The condition can lead to dysfunction of various systems and organ systems, as well as progression of CKD. Sodium bicarbonate is primarily used for treatment, while a new drug, veverimer, shows promise but requires further studies. This article provides a comprehensive review of the existing literature on the topic.
