Mycetoma can be caused by either actinomycetes (actinomycetoma) or fungi (eumycetoma) and is characterized by chronic infections that lead to significant morbidity. The disease is prevalent in specific climate zones and primarily affects the foot, although it can occur on other body parts. Diagnosis is challenging due to the lack of reliable serological tests, but molecular techniques are emerging as promising tools for identifying causative organisms. Treatment options vary, with antibiotics being effective for actinomycetoma, while eumycetoma currently lacks a definitive treatment.
