Nontyphoidal Salmonella are a leading cause of community-onset bacteremia and other serious infections in sub-Saharan African countries. The article estimates that approximately 535,000 cases of nontyphoidal Salmonella invasive disease and 77,500 deaths occurred in 2017, with a significant proportion of these cases and deaths occurring in sub-Saharan Africa. The authors discuss the challenges in managing these infections, particularly in the context of co-morbidities such as malaria and HIV, and emphasize the need for effective vaccines to prevent these diseases.
